Warmer days bring more opportunities to luxuriate outdoors. But it’s also the season that reveals any damage done to the hard surfaces on driveways, patios and pool areas previously hidden by snow and ice. And as style-conscious homeowners turn their attention outdoors, they may cast a critical eye on the hardscaping design, wishing it better complemented their home.

If it’s time for a refresh, there are many reasons to opt for architectural stamped concrete, says Joe Guida, the president of Patterned Concrete, a North York-based company that has specialized in the versatile material for nearly half a century. “Our products can give you the luxurious look of natural stone,” he says, “But concrete is both durable and low maintenance and versatile enough to create installations that are bespoke works of beauty.”

“Concrete is both durable and low maintenance and versatile enough to create installations that are bespoke works of beauty.”

And it will be beauty that stands the test of time, as properly installed concrete can last up to 25 years. From the outset, the company did this standard poured material differently, developing the tools and unique finishes that have made it a global name. Today, it imprints concrete with an array of textures, patinas and polished finishes; there are more than 50 unique, proprietary Signature finishes to choose from.

Patterned Concrete Ontario serves the GTA and is the winner of nine concrete design awards. Its creative and technical teams can field any challenge from the contractors, homeowners and designers it works with.  These days, that can mean artistic inlaid patterns, flowing curves or elegant moulded shapes, not only on driveways and walks but patios, outdoor kitchens, pool surrounds and gazebos. The in-house design professionals elevate outdoor living areas with functional integrated plans that flow beautifully, front to back.

Function also is important for clients, Guida notes. For anyone installing a new driveway or sidewalk, this expert advises prioritizing one highly practical feature. “Last winter’s heavy snowfall really brought home what a hassle it can be to keep them clear of ice and snow,” he says. “Installing a snowmelt system under your concrete surfaces now will save a lot of shoveling later and is an excellent way to keep you and your loved ones safe.” It’s also an investment worth making as it reduces the chance of damage caused by freeze-thaw conditions, salt or plowing.

Luxe options that appeal to homeowners in 2025 include patterned concrete with the look and feel of European cobblestones and brick. It beautifully complements not only traditional-style homes but more contemporary architecture, too. Concrete that emulates slate, flagstone or river rock is also trending. Aesthetically pleasing, these textures provide the extra benefit of safety, as their textured surfaces are more slip-resistant. “Trends come and go, but given the longevity of Patterned Concrete outdoor surfaces, it’s best to think timeless,” Guida says. “Our designers can help create a look that is truly in harmony with your home and makes the most of your investment.”
