In a remarkable demonstration of philanthropy, Dr. Steve Gupta and Rashmi Gupta have gifted a transformative $1 million to the Ted Rogers School of Management at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). The substantial contribution, facilitated through The Gupta Family Foundation, was commemorated in a ceremonial cheque presentation on January 26, 2024, at the TMU campus. This noteworthy endowment underscores the Gupta family’s steadfast commitment to advancing higher education and fostering the aspirations of students pursuing academic and professional excellence.

Dr. Steve Gupta’s journey from his arrival in Canada in 1971 with nearly $108 to his eminent status as a developer, hotelier, business leader, and philanthropist is undeniably remarkable. His company, Easton’s Group of Hotels, received the prestigious Pinnacle Award as “Hotel Company of The Year” by Hotelier Magazine in 2000. Dr. Gupta’s numerous accolades include being conferred the title of “Businessman of The Year” by the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce, receiving the Queen’s Golden & Diamond Jubilee Medal, and being appointed to the Order of Ontario in 2022. The Gupta family’s philanthropic endeavours extend beyond Canadian borders, encompassing charitable initiatives such as eye camps in India, a water and sanitation project for a girls’ school, and significant contributions to the construction of a retirement community in Richmond Hill, Ontario. Their enduring support for the Toronto International Film Festival is evident in the official designation of the TIFF Bell Lightbox box office as the Steve and Rashmi Gupta Box Office.

Dr. Steve Gupta, Founder and Chairman of The Gupta Group, gracefully articulates his belief in the transformative power of education, stating, “Learning is like breathing – it should never stop.” The Gupta family’s commitment to community betterment harmoniously aligns with their dedication to creating opportunities for individuals to realize their aspirations through education.

The $1 million donation is poised to have a lasting impact on TMU’s Ted Rogers School of Management, specifically benefiting Master of Business Administration (MBA) students specializing in hospitality and tourism management. Beyond its substantial monetary value, this gift provides essential financial awards, affording the Dean the flexibility to address priority needs and enhance the overall educational experience.

Dr. Cynthia Holmes, Dean of Ted Rogers School of Management, emphasized the profound significance of the donation, particularly within the context of a business school with a diverse student demographic. With over 50 per cent of TMU’s business students identifying as racialized and 30 per cent as first-generation university attendees, the Gupta family’s immigrant experience and success in Canadian business inspire their contribution with special resonance, establishing a meaningful connection with the educational community. As a token of gratitude, TMU proudly acknowledges the Gupta family’s generosity by giving the name ‘The Steve & Rashmi Gupta Lecture Theatre’ upon the Ted Rogers School’s premier auditorium, a 500-seat venue utilized for business classes and various academic disciplines.

In the winter of 2025, two deserving MBA students will receive the ‘Gupta Family Foundation Award,’ marking the commencement of an annual series of awards aimed at providing crucial financial support to MBA students and ensuring a lasting impact on the education and trajectories of future business leaders.

The Gupta family’s $1 million donation to the Ted Rogers School of Management at TMU stands as a testament to their unwavering belief in the transformative potential of education and their steadfast commitment to community welfare. This generous contribution will not only support current MBA students but also leave an enduring legacy, shaping the trajectory of business education at TMU for generations to come. As ‘The Steve & Rashmi Gupta Lecture Theatre’ assumes its role as a symbol of academic excellence, the Gupta family’s philanthropic legacy will continue to empower aspiring business leaders and contribute significantly to the success of TMU’s diverse student body.
